El Salvador Dehydrated Honey Hybrid 1

Carlos Pola - El Salvador || Farm Hybrid 1

Farm Hybrids is the name we give to rust resistant varieties that have been in the farm for 3-4 decades and that uniquely flourish in our microclimates.

In recent years, there has been an increase in genetic recombinations and we have put a lot of effort into carefully selecting the best trees for reproduction. The results have been very satisfactory in terms of productivity, resistance to plagues, adaptability to climate change and cup quality.

Here is a brief summary of both hybrids and below is a coffee genotype report from samples we submitted to the World Coffee Research for analysis.

Farm Hybrid 1 (Mano Del Puma)

  • This was introduced in San Antonio farm around 1990 as a test variety that was resistant to coffee rust.

  • After the 2012 coffee rust pandemic this variety was among the few varieties that survived.

  • We have made large renovations with this variety in Finca San Antonio (SAN).

Hybrids generally are offsping resulting from the breeding of two genetically distinct individuals. F1 Hybrids are a new generation of varieties created by crossing genetically distinct Arabica Parents and using first generation F1 Offspring. F1 hybrids are notable because they tend to have significantly higher production than non-hybrids. Many of these relatively new varieties were created to combine the best characteristics of the two parents, including higher cup quality, high yield, and disease resistant.

Hybrid 1, specifically is a genetic of two distinct Catimor varieties that were developed between crosses of (Timor Hybrid x Caturra). The original crosses were developed in the 1920's on the Island of Timor Leste and sexually reproduced to create the original Timor Hybrid. Out of the the Timor Hybrid Line came the Catimor, and out of the combination of two distinct Catimors, comes the Hybrid 1.
